WALDHAUSER - My great grandfather Joseph Penkala was born in the Richvald area in 1862. His father Ignatz Penkala was married there and the church records mention that he was from a village called Visova. I haven’t been able to trace this village anywhere. My grand mother Anna Penkala was born in Sojanko(a), maybe Solyomko, now Soimeni in Romania and grew up in Haromhuta, now in Hungary. All the men in the family seem to have been glassblowers. The other family names I’m researching are Waldhauser (sometimes spelled with ‘V’), Barany and Opicz. From what I’ve been able to determine, these families knew each for a long time and moved to new villages together many times. Louise M. Hamel, 2557 E Sylvia St., Tucson, AZ 85716, USA, (1999-10-05)

WALLENTINY (Dobšiná) - John G. Valentine came from Dobschau in the early 1900s (probably before 1910). His name may have been Wallentiny and he was a Lutheran. I know that he came from Dobschau and was friends with the Koschik family also from Dobschau. Randall Valentine, (2005-01-10)

WARHOLA (Brezina) - My husband's grandfather was Paul (Pavel or Pawel) Warchola. He was born on Aug 1, 1869 or maybe 1867 in Kolbas. Mother Maria and father Andrew, Greek Catholic Religion and Carpatho Rusyn descent. He came to America in 1886. His first wife was Juliana Varkash, born 1879. Margaret Warhola, RR 1 Box 41D, Kingsley, Pa 18826, USA (2004-05-17)
WARCHEK - I am interested in finding information about my Slovak ancestors. I have hit a wall because I do not know for sure where they came from. Oral history has Nicholas Fertal coming from “Berno” (pronunciation) and his wife Susan Vavrek from a town 15 miles east of there. Genealogists say Berno is Czech and no Fertals were there. Slovak genealogists that I have contacted pretty much insist that they need to know where people came from before they can do anything. My family was definitely Slovak and proud of it. Here is what I know: My mother’s parents: Father - Nicholas Fertal born 22 July 1865 in “Berno”, died 13 Feb 1928 in Plymouth, PA. The 1900 census lists his immigration year as 1881. Nicholas's parents were Nicholas Fertal and Anna Warchek, (no other information). No information exists on them immigrating to the USA and I assume they remained in “Berno”. My Mother’s mother - Susan Vavrek born 10 Feb 1866 in a village 15 miles east of “Berno”, died 24 Aug 1918 in Plymouth, PA. The 1900 census lists her immigration year as 1885. Susan's mother, Mary Vavrek born abt 1857 or 1849, appears as Nicholas's mother-in-law in the 1910 census as a widow. It lists her as immigrating from "Slovakia" in 1884. Susan's father was John Vavrek - born about 1840 Slovakia - 16 Jan 1917 Plymouth, PA. Pete Buckley, Gainesville, VA, USA, (2010-11-20)
WASSILAK (Zborov) - I have scarce information on my relatives from the Zborov region from the late 1880’s or so. I am wondering how can find out more. My name is Leighton Wassilak but the spelling has been a “V” in place of the W on some of the old papers. Leighton Wassilak, 4765 Forman Rd, St. Louis, MO 63123 USA, 314 631 8465, (2013-04-15)

WASZKA - I search for the ancestors of my wife in Slovakia. Their name was Stanga, they were masons and they came from the hamlet Carasole in the community of Roveredo, Grisons, Switzerland. They worked for count Pálffy at Bojnice in the second half of the 17th century. They first lived in Opatovce, then in Nováky. I especially search for Michael Stanga who was born 26th September 1740 in Nováky as a catholic and died 28th November 1811 as a lutheran mason in Rimavská Sobota. His parents, Michael and Anna Stanga are not mentioned, only his age of 74 years (recte 71 years). At the age of 50 years he had a son Michael, born 11th October 1790, with Susanna, but when Michael married 14th September 1812 Sophia Kassay is mentioned as his mother. (Probably they had also two daughters: Susanna, *cca 1779, and Maria, *cca1785). 4th April 1800 died his wife Elisabeth Sajler at the age of 36 years. With her he had a daughter Elisabeth. 22th November 1802 he married Maria Waszka or Watzka. It seems that Michael Stanga stayed in another, probably lutheran village in his younger years. It is probable that there he married Sophia Kassay. Dr. Walter Büchi, Äschenthürlistrasse 18 b, CH-6030 Ebikon, Switzerland, 0041 41 440 15 34, (2012-01-11)

WICSIK - I have traced my geneology back to my great grandfather Mihaly Liska (wife Catherina Radacovic) who arrived in the U.S. from Vistuk, Slovakia (1909) and to my great grandmother Anna Wicsik, daughter of Michael Wicsik (wife Roza Danka) from Budmerice, Slovakia. My research also found where Mihaly came to the U.S. in 1906 and 1909. In 1906 he gave his residence as Koeart, Hungary. I can not find the location of that town and I'm sure the clerk who logged great grandfather's information wrote what he thought might be the spelling of the town. William J. WINKO - My great grandfather Vendelinus Vinka was the son of Emericus Vinka and Anna Majzun born in Zavod (No. 119), Bratislava, Slovakia in 1900 according to his baptism papers. The family was also Roman Catholics. According to an Ohio census Anna was born about 1880 and I believe that at some point Emericus changed his name to Henry and the 1910 federal Ohio census says he was born about 1873. The family immigrated to America through Ellis Island and settled in Ohio: Passenger list for the SS Lahn dated 6 Dec 1900 shows the arrival of a Imre (or Emre) Vinka born about 1873/74 coming from Zavod and going to Bellaire, Ohio. Pasenger list for the SS Barbarossa dated 16 Feb 1905 shows the arrival of Anna Vinka (born about 1880) and her son Vendol Vinka (born about 1900) coming from Zavod and traveling to Emrich Vinka in Bellaire, Ohio. There was also a Miklos Majzun traveling on the Barbarossa from Zavod. There are also various Majzun and Vinka passengers traveling from Zavod to the US during various years. Emericus and Anna Vinka left behind a daughter named Helen or Helena born 1898 in Zavod with Emericus's grandfather. She later married someone with the last name Sisolak - first name possibly John. Vendelinus had his name changed to Wendel Winko in Louisiana, 1923. Emericus had two sisters and I think their names were Anna and Catherine. Emericus and Anna later had five more children in Ohio: Mary, Joseph, John, Elizabeth, and Paul (who was later adopted by the Radish family). I found a 1910 federal census with the family in Ohio. I am looking for information about this family while they resided in Zavod. Interested if there were any generations that came from the left behind daughter (Helen or Helena). Also if anything is know about previous generations. Dan Winko, , priloha (2007-03-13)
